The 151st Diocesan Convention of the Diocese of Bethlehem

October 1, 2022

Representing St. Andrew's via Zoom were Father Scott, Deacon Lane, and lay delegates Donna Barnum and Sharon Lowe.

The convention opened with a short prayer service, followed by an address by Bishop Kevin which can be heard here.

Elections for various diocesan committees were held. Five resolutions were discussed and approved:

Resolution 1 was a recommendation for both clergy and lay employees in the diocese and the parishes to receive an 8 1/2% cost of living increase in their compensation. This increase is tied to the consumer price index. The recommendation is particularly high this year because of the high rate of inflation in our country.

Resolution 2 saw the approval of the diocesan budget. It’s about 10% higher than last year and is balanced. It includes some financial aid to parishes with full-time clergy positions.

Resolutions 3 and 4 made minor changes to the Diocesan Canons about voting rules at the Diocesan Council, and worship rules at future conventions.

Resolution 5 established a ten-person committee consisting of the two Bishops and four lay members from each diocese to study the feasibility and benefits of combining our Diocese with the Diocese of Central Pennsylvania. This is a one year study. Historically, until 1904, the two dioceses were united under the name The Diocese of Central Pennsylvania prior to the founding of the separate dioceses of Harrisburg and Bethlehem.

The 2023 Diocese of Bethlehem Convention will be held in Center Valley, in person, on October 13 and 14, 2023.
